Woke up today & lay in bed maybe a little too long Didn't feel altogether motivated to do much of anything at all The sky was grey, the wind was blowing on a Saturday in June More like a winter's day which fitted my mood Thank You, Bill for showing me the light Music and love can make you feel alright Thank you for showing me the light Music and love can make you feel alright Just when I was hanging up my towel by the open bedroom window so it'd dry a car pulled up I could hear some music from the stereo I thought, "Simple Minds?" Then I picked out what it was A song I'd heard so many times With the distinctive vocal and bassline Thank You, Bill for showing me the light Music and love can make you feel alright Thank you for showing me the light Music and love can make you feel alright The driver was singing along "It's gonna be a lovely day" He was trying to hold the note like he was teaching his kid the song It changed my mood and I felt a little lighter I poured myself a bowl of cereal Added some strawberries and felt the day was getting better Thank You, Bill for showing me the light Music and love can make you feel alright Thank you for showing me the light Music and love can make you feel alright

We're taught that the bully never should win We learn that the bully never should win But superior firepower always wins We're told that the bully never should win We know that the bully never should win But superior firepower always wins always wins Cannons, guns or bombs if you have more diseases that you bring ashore

I guess you could say I'm afraid of the dark That place that I go sometimes, when I'm alone Circling round, without a way to see The good things I've found & that have found me Stay out of the darkness When you're alone Look for the light Reach out for someone Sometimes all I want is to be left alone To shrink away from everyone & everything people have made So much ugliness and so much pain But if I do I'm hiding from the chance of love and goodness, too Stay out of the darkness When you're alone Look for the light Reach out for someone That way you won't dwell on your fears for too long Look for the light There you will find love There you will find love

We're bad neighbours Really bad neighbours We're bad neighbours Nothing really needs really bad neighbours When we move in you might as well wave goodbye to your lives to everything but us and what we need to get by We might not leave a single weed We're exterminators, serial killers We're bad neighbours Really bad neighbours We're bad neighbours Nothing really wants really bad neighbours When we move in the results are always the same You won't last long You'll be dead as the Dodo in no time at all Maybe we can find a place for you on our dinner plate, or our real estate Loud music is the least of your worries We're bad neighbours Really bad neighbours We're bad neighbours Nothing really needs really bad neighbours If you could ask us why we're doing this I don't think that we would know We don't realise we're doing this We're just good at it You know You know

Party Animal 03:39
I can see you're a real party animal But are you just a one trick pony after all is said and done? The things they're saying about you Make me think you're someone special I should pay attention to But your words, they don't reach me They don't touch me Your words, they don't reach me They don't touch me at all Maybe I don't see the same things that they do When they are listening to you Maybe I'm looking for something different Or I'm just put off by your attitude The things they're saying about you Make me think you're someone special I should pay attention to But the sound you make, it doesn't move me It doesn't touch me The sound you make it doesn't move me It doesn't touch me at all
6.
I Don't Know 03:03
I don't know what I'm doing I'm not sure who I'm fooling I don't know what I'm doing at all I'm not sure what I was thinking I don't know if this ship's sinking I can't read the writing on the wall at all I don't know what I'm saying Don't understand the games I'm playing I don't know where this is going at all
7.
Spilled Milk 03:53
When we say, "it's a crazy world we live in!" what we mean is, the world of human beings It's like we've taken this planet for ourselves Separated us from everything else We pushed it too far, took too much Now there's not enough of anything else Looming on the horizon The day when we're all alone In the world of human beings Us & factory farms But you don't cry over spilled milk Won't cry over spilt milk Don't cry over spilled milk Now it's just us and factory farms Kids are sleeping with soft toys in their arms They don't know yet what we've done No point in mourning what has gone We still have cartoon animals Taxidermy bears and other furry pals We pushed it too far, took too much Now there's not enough of anything else We pushed it too far, took too much Now there's not enough of everything else But you don't cry over spilled milk Won't cry over spilt milk Don't cry over spilled milk So what of spilled blood? What of flesh and blood? What of spilt blood? Is it ever enough to make you sit up?

Vending machines in schools Product placement everywhere Advertising boards in the park Where your kids go to play Where you go to get away But you can't It only leaves you wanting Is childhood just a means to an end? A fast track to the money that you'll earn and spend? You're learning your ABC Learning to count to 3 Before you know it, you're learning to be A good capitalist A good capitalist What's the meaning of life, if not this? What's your net worth? What's your USP? What's your country's GDP? What car do you drive? Do you feel like you've arrived? That you're the person you always wanted to be? Your childhood's just a means to an end A fast track to the money that you'll earn and spend You're learning your ABC Learning to count to 3 Before you know it, you're learning to be A good capitalist A good capitalist Where's the meaning in life, if not in this? The cliffhanger leads into advertising space (The ad break) Beautiful people everywhere On glossy pages and glowing screens Is there nothing money can't buy? Maybe happiness But you're programmed to try

Sleepyhead 03:42
Was that the sun that just showed its face? It's not exactly warm You could stay all day in this place Or you could use the power of the sun Before the day is done Before the day is done Wake up sleepyhead Get up, get out of bed Or you could stay here instead & live in dreams inside your head It's not safe to leave the house You never know what you might find out We've let an ugly creature off the leash This is a funny place to hide A funny place to hide Wake up sleepyhead Get up, get out of bed Or you could stay here instead & live in dreams inside your head Was it a dream I had last night? There was a powerful creature He gave his buddies a free ride But people didn't seem to mind You couldn't breathe the air outside There was a powerful creature He let his buddies off the hook It was a funny place to hide

Breathe 04:38
I woke up on the sofa Where I'd slept away the afternoon I hadn't worked on this song 'til I went out for a walk & it came along There's so many things In this cluttered place You can go back again & again But it won't change a thing It's the here & now Where you want to be Listen to your breathing Tells you something You need to know You're alive right now So breathe This is all you need To do Right now Breathe Breathe deeply Inhale, exhale Pull the air into your lungs There's so many things In this cluttered place You were haunting it for so many years Then you left With the present in your hands There's no need to go back What's gone has passed So breathe This is all you need To do Right now Breathe Breathe deeply Inhale, exhale Pull the air into your lungs Hold it there Let it out again Remember, you're not alone Remember, you're not alone So breathe

There's a salesman at the wheel He's alive but doesn't feel compassion, love or empathy Could it be his heart is cold and empty? There's a salesman at the wheel What he does is take your fears What he does is take your dreams Then he sells them right back to you You'll be bankrupt in the end Realise that he was no friend But it's just too late when you see There's a salesman at the wheel and he's Pulling levers, pushing buttons Pulling levers, pushing buttons There's a salesman at the wheel He's so full of big ideas & he's busy making plans for us Our fate is in his hands But it's just too late when you see There's a salesman at the wheel and he's Pulling levers, pushing buttons Pulling levers, pushing buttons

Our proudest achievement could surely be That we lived in peace & harmony With the gifts we were given On the planet where we were born It's such a beautiful place But we've shown it only scorn Start to repair the damage we've done Go into reverse Try to change direction It's a fragile path On which every living creature must tread A balancing act Where all life has a part to play Our mistakes can have dire consequences Our greed wrecks all our chances Start to repair the damage we've done Go into reverse Try to change direction The fear of destruction Keeps people in their place Meanwhile all other life has no say in its fate We won't admit where we've gone wrong To do so is seen as weakness But we're not perfect That's for sure Start to repair the damage we've done Go into reverse Try to change direction

about

An album I spent a few months recording at home starting June 2020, named after some fields next to Victory Park, which is close to where I live in Bristol. I was going there for a walk pretty much every day for fresh air when I was recording these songs.

Very few places locally have escaped human development, so Brislington Meadows has been especially important as a home for wildlife. Plans were announced in 2020 that 300 houses would be built on the land, which would mean the meadows would be gone forever. I was deeply saddened by that prospect. Then unexpected news came in April 2021 from the Mayor & via local news that no houses would be built on the land after all because of the ecological emergency. Now a U-turn has happened & the wheels are in motion for a revised plan of 260 houses to be built on the land. If you want to find out more & do something, you can start by looking at the "Save Brislington Meadows" group on Facebook.

It's taken me until I'm nearly 50 years old to record an album of my own songs, & it means a lot to me to have done it. Thanks for having a listen.
